Journalism & Writing

The profession of journalism has also been at the heart of Goan individuals. Although writing is an art that comes both, with natural instincts and with indulgence in knowledge-based habits & interests, it does not necessarily produce journalists. All writers are not journalists but they do have their own reputation in their respective domains of interest - authoring books, writing poetry, scripting for specialized content etc.

Anthony Mascarenhas was probably one of the most prolific of journalists to be produced by the community. He wrote for the Morning News which was the largest circulated newspaper in East and West Pakistan. His daring political analysis of the brewing-up of the crisis that dismantled the East wing was a turning point in the history of journalism in Pakistan.

In the sports arena there have been several, Michael Ignatius was the Sports Editor of the Morning News in the 1960s and contributed in a big way to make the morninger a household name in Pakistan. This writer started as a rookie correspondent for Morning News in 1975 covering local sports news, including the two Champions Trophy Hockey World Championships held in Karachi and later the World Cup Hockey Tournament in Bombay in 1982; also including a small stint in the Dawn Group, writing for the city pages in The Star.

Lionel Andrades also started his career with the Morning News in the 1980s and wrote for the city pages, including special features for various news magazines and periodicals. Walter Fernandes was one of the most well-known sports writers of his time in the 1980s and 1990s writing as a Sports Correspondent for Dawn. His critical analysis of the sports he covered earned him respect from his senior colleagues. Ian Fyfe too was with Dawn sports covering horse-racing, billiards and cricket. Robin Fernandes has been another promising journalist who started his career with the Monthly SHE magazine and moved on to write for reputable news magazines. Robin is currently the editor of The Christian Voice.

Today we have the versatile and brave political analyst Cyril Almeida who writes regularly for Dawn, including hosting programs on Politics on Dawn TV. His articles have a peculiar nip and his viewpoints on critical national issues have earned him good respect among his readers and fellow media people. Marilou Andrew is another talented journalist now writing for Dawn's marketing publication called Aurora.

Yet another fine exponent in writing is Frederick Nazareth who has excelled himself as a content writer in the field of advertising and communications, having spent a good 35 years in the profession. Cheryl Antao, formerly of Karachi and now residing in Toronto, Canada has blossomed into a prolific poet, having published her first book recently.
