Judiciary & the Law

Mostly, before partition and for several years after Pakistan came into being, we had some distinguished Christians in the Judiciary. The most prominent being the Justice A.R. Cornelius, Chief Justice of Pakistan. These brilliant judges of the supreme and high courts of Pakistan played a pivotal role in the country's constitutional and political affairs, pioneering a series of historical judgments.

Charles Lobo, Judge of the Sind High Court and Chairman of the Public Service Commission in Pakistan, was also appointed Pakistan's delegate to the United Nations.

Edward Raymond was the first Indian to be appointed by the British on the Indian sub-continent to adorn the Bench of the Judicial Commissioner's Court in Sind. His son Herman Raymond (Oxford) was one time Chief Prosecutor of Sind and Baluchistan and was also made a Judge of the High Court and appointed by President Ayub Khan on a Special Judicial Committee to investigate the actions of politicians. Another brother Gerald Raymond was an Official Assignee of the High Courts.

Barrister Bruno de Sa of Cinncinatus Town (who passed away at the age of 105 years) was the Registrar of the High Courts of Karachi in 1925, as well as Emmanuel Castellinho, also a Registrar. William Lobo was a lawyer by profession and in latter years, the 70s and 80s, the unflappable Mrs. E.C. Pinto was an accomplished advocate of the High Court.
